CGNU, Lawn and Gladiator UCSB09 Champs |
Thank you to Sensei Ultimate and all the captains, players, volunteers
and partners that made this years Ultimate Chicago Sandblast the
biggest and best year ever. In our ninth year, we once again welcomed
48 teams and 720 player participants from as far as San Francisco
(CGNU, Obama Nation), Boston (Sunbear), New York (Just the Tip),
Austin (Puszi Puszi), and multiple teams from Minneapolis, Michigan,
Indiana and of course, Chicago. We had our best weather with two days
of rain-free, low-seventy degree temperatures as Sandblast
participants were catered to with Chipotle burritos, VitaminWater and
Powerade beverages, fruit and bagels as well as player pack bags with
more goodies and food supplies including Clif Bars and Chapstick.
Congratulations to CGNU (#2 seed) from San Francisco captained by
Chuck Kindred who rounded out their Lei Out 2009 championship with the
Game Division Championship with a convincing 15-5 win over Sun's Out
Guns Out (#4 seed) captained by Chris Rupp with a combination of Minny
and Madison players. By winning the tournament, CGNU received more
than $2000 in prizes - Breakmark championship jersey (onsite
delivery), comped bids to UCSB10 AND LeiOut10, Chipotle dinners for 4
(per player), BULA Discraft discs AND a Sandblast 2009 beanbag/
cornhole game set from Chicago Custom Cornhole. Wow! Defending
champion Sandbjob came as Team Zissou and based on some injuries and
absences, they were not able to repeat. Kudos to captain Jason
Schmidt for showing their spirit with a great red hat-shirt costume
combination.
Congratulations to Get Off My Lawn from Chicago captained by Ernie
Miyashita on their Spirit Division Championship as voted on by the
other division captains. At Sandblast, the Spirit Division encourages
team to come with themes, costumes, games and other shennanigans.
They impressed with the other teams with "arthritis points" where
everyone wore oven mitts. Other teams were the American Gladiators
(yes, just like TV show), Wedding Party (dressed in wedding,
bridesmaids dresses and tuxedos) and more. Defending champion Boogie
Knights captained by Colleen Costello, came back as Let the Wookie
Win, had an impressive and semi-emotional showing saying goodbye to
teammate and super-volunteers Jeremy and Kate.
In the closest competition of the event weekend, congratulations to
American Gladiators for reclaiming their title of Party Champion with
an impressive 15 representatives at the close of the first bar of the
night. Defending champion Hoffman's Mom (Indy) and Kablammo was a
surprising second with ten folks not even knowing there was a
competition. Based on the amount of stumbling, it's pretty safe to
say the party was a huge success with more than 400 attendees for a
room of DJ-spun tunes, a room of a great cover band and four hours of
FREE Goose Island 312 beer, Svedka vodka and Kilo Kai rum drinks mixed
with VitaminWater. Great stuff and thanks to the Coach House at Uncle
Fatty's for being such a generous host.
Thank you again to everyone as you all player a part in making this
such a successful event. A player survey will be out shortly asking
for your feedback on what worked well and what suggestions you have to
help us continually improve your experience. By responding to the
survey, you will be eligible for more than $2000 in raffle prizes. I
encourage players to respond/contribute with their feedback on their
event experience this past weekend.
Next year is #10 and is guaranteed to bigger and better than ever. Please pencil in 7/10 in 2010 for #10!
Best ultimate wishes for your fall seasons and I look forward to
seeing you all at The Rock (August) and Chicago Heavyweight
Championships (September) hosted by Sensei Ultimate or at Cooler.
