Chicago Sandblast is a co-ed beach ultimate frisbee tournament and in our seventh year, our player-participants voted to raise money and awareness for Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity is changing lives. Working in partnership with low-income families to build decent homes they can afford to buy, Habitat helps to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness. By the end of 2005, more than 1 million people worldwide will live in decent, affordable Habitat for Humanity houses.

I am very excited to welcome Windy City Habitat for Humanity back once again as the charitable beneficiary of Sandblast’s fundraising efforts as voted on by past captains like yourselves. In 2008, we raised more than $4,000 and I know that we will raise more than $7,000 in 2009 for this great cause. In the two past years, we have seen some teams make the effort to raise money and others not so much. I surveyed several captains at the end of 2008 and got positive feedback to implementing a plan this year that would make each team responsible for just $150 in fundraising or just $10 per roster spot.

I have attached a one-page guide for you to setup a custom Active.com fundraising page for your team and for your players to create their own under your team. For new teams and captains, I assure you that this process is very simple and effective for doing our part to give back to the community. I feel that this is a unique and valuable part of Sandblast and encourage you to reach out to me with your questions and comments. Please encourage your players to check their charitable gift-giving policies at work because many will match employee contributions.

I also want to emphasize the point above that every one of the 48 Sandblast teams is REQUIRED to raise at least $150. If you and your team have not raised the $150 by the Friday night Captains meeting, you will be responsible for making the donation. For example, if your team raises $100, you will be responsible for the $50 balance. If your team raises $200, you will not be responsible for any balance. If you do not raise the $150 and do not pay the balance, you will not be allowed to play over the weekend.

I appreciate that there may be a concern over the cost of participating at Sandblast and I would not have implemented this program without the support and feedback of other captains like yourselves. I want this to be a positive thing for how you, your team and the event are giving back to the community, so I again encourage you to get in contact with me regarding your questions and comments.
